I use the knowledge and experience gained in the program in my work as a ski patroller on a daily basis. I am confident that it has made me a safer patroller and has enabled me to contribute more to the snow safety team.

Avalanche Mitigation and Snow Safety

Days on patrol start with a forecast of avalanche problems and decisions on mitigation efforts. The Avalanche Science Program has given me the tools and awareness to understand these choices and look for terrain where there are concerns.

The experience gained while patrolling goes hand in hand with the program - it is a great advantage being able to spend so much time in the snow, see many avalanches over the course of the season, and utilize the many tools at our disposal.

Running the Safety and Education Program

As part of my job as the Safety and Education Technician on the patrol, I run half day long programs for local youth of the Roaring Fork Valley with the help of other patrollers. We focus on skier safety, but also do many activities which introduces avalanche awareness to the students.

The knowledge I have gained through the Avalanche Science Program allows me to be a better educator.
