Projects / Project 1 - College Backcountry Course and Hut Trip Safety Plan
A team of 5 of my classmates and I created a full safety plan for a fictional college looking to implement a backcountry travel course for its students. The assignment was put forth as follows:
"The college is seeking qualified analysis of this new terrain, a detailed risk management plan for travel to/from the Sangree M. Froelicher Hut and travel within the permitted area for course instruction, detailed snow and weather forecasting items, and a list of related deliverables supporting the college’s ongoing coursework operations in this new zone. This body of work will be used by the college for its overall land use permit management practices and overall risk management planning as well as for the course leaders conducting OUT214 courses in this zone."

In completing this project, I learned the following key skills:
-
Creating and verifying a detailed terrain atlas, and classifying that terrain using The Avalanche Terrain Exposure Scale of the Canadian Avalanche Association.
-
Gathered data in the field to characterize the areas snowpack
-
Put together a seasonal snowpack review using weather station data, SNOTEL site data, and observations.
-
Established a daily forecasting process for the client and risk management framework, including an emergency response plan
-
Decide on useful sites for needed weather stations and spec out all instrumentation needed, along with costs
